Colonial Dressmaker

I am the colonial dressmaker.  I use flax and sheep wool. The wool has to be washed because it is dirty.

I also have to put the wool into grease before I spin it.  I card it, which is like smoothing out the wool. I spin the wool on a spinning wheel.  When the spinning is done, you get thread.

If you want colored thread, then you have to dye it.  When you dye, you can use berries like blueberries and raspberries.  You can also use bark and roots.

I make clothing for men and women and children.  I make bonnets and dresses for women and pants and shirts for men.  For girls they wore dresses almost like what their mothers’ wore. For boys, they wore shirts and pants like what their dads’ wore.

I hope you liked learning about my job.

  2. Hi Stuffy,
I really enjoyed reading your post. You were very detailed and your photos definitely added to your writing. It seems like making clothes is rather difficult? How do you do it? I look forward to reading more of your blog posts.

    All the best,
